Canada has unveiled a remote work program that allows individuals to live and work in the country for up to six months, Euronews reports.
The initiative aims to address Canada's skills shortage while providing an attractive opportunity for remote workers seeking new experiences, according to Sean Fraser, the minister of immigration, refugees, and citizenship.
Under current Canadian immigration rules, digital nomads employed by foreign companies only need visitor status to come to Canada for six months at a time.
Unlike many other countries, Canada has no salary cap, making it one of the most relaxed and inclusive remote work programs in the world.
“In the months ahead, IRCC [Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada] will collaborate with public and private partners alike to determine whether additional policies to attract digital nomads to Canada would be desirable,” says a Canadian government press statement.
For remote workers who receive a job offer from a Canadian company, the government offers the opportunity to apply for a temporary work permit that allows them to remain in Canada for an extended period of time.
To simplify the hiring process for international remote workers, companies can also partner with an Employer of Record in Canada. An EOR takes on the legal responsibilities of employment, allowing businesses to quickly onboard talent without needing to establish a Canadian legal entity.

Minister Fraser highlighted the potential economic impact of these workers and expressed hope that their spending will make an important contribution to local communities.
In addition to the remote work program, the Canadian government has introduced two other initiatives to attract talent from abroad.
The first initiative focuses specifically on the tech industry and plans to develop an "Innovation" program by the end of 2022.
This program aims to welcome highly skilled professionals from the tech sector, whether or not they have a job offer, and targets high-demand occupations to be determined at a later date.
Another initiative is a work permit program designed specifically for American workers that further strengthens the relationship between Canada and its neighbor.
