Most sustainable destinations in Madeira

The isle of eternal spring is, on the whole, one of the greenest places in Europe you can visit, but still, it doesn’t hurt learning about all the sustainable destinations it has to offer. And while travelling to and from Madeira island is difficult to do without a substantial carbon footprint (as you can only get to the island on a ship or a plane), once you’re on the island, there is no shortage of eco-friendly places.

Levadas in Madeira

Levadas are a specific type of irrigation that transports water from mountain springs down to the fertile lands below. They also, however, make for fantastic hiking trails. Visit Levada do Caldeirao Verde, the most “instagrammable” spot in Madeira due to its natural beauty and lush forests. Another often recommended trail is the Levada das 25 Fontes, literally meaning “The 25 Fountain Trail”, named after the many waterfalls you’ll encounter on the way. And for a shorter walk, try the Levada dos Cedros. Take any of these trails, and you’ll have an unforgettable trip.

Mountains and hills in Madeira

Although Madeira isn’t a huge island, it manages to be incredibly diverse in its natural beauties. So while many people will go for a walk along levadas, others might want to climb peaks for the thrill of seeing the island from above. One such place is the Ponta de Sao Lourenço, the easternmost point of Madeira in Portugal. Accessible even by amateur hikers. It offers gorgeous views of the surrounding hills as well as the ocean. Another excellent place is the trail connecting the two highest points of Madeira; Pico do Arieiro (1817 m) and Pico Ruivo (1862 m). This trail is a bit more demanding, but it’s worth it for the stunning views you’ll encounter along the way. Lastly, climb on top of the highest cliff in Europe, Cabo Girao, which has a recently installed glass structure on top of it to let you enjoy the feeling of being suspended 600 m above ground.

Beaches in Madeira

Lastly, no trip to Madeira Island is complete without spending some time at the beach. It is the quintessential island experience. But where should you go to avoid crowds? One place you cannot miss out on is the Praia do Porto do Seixal. Here you can enjoy beautiful greenery together with a refreshing ocean to soothe your mind. Alternatively, you might want to check out the volcanic rocks turned natural pools in Porto Moniz. This place is especially great for a family vacation with small kids who might appreciate calmer waters. Either way, Madeira island has a nearly endless supply of gorgeous beaches, and the best way to know about them is to go and explore on your own. There’s nothing like a small piece of the ocean of your very own, even if only for an afternoon.
